Wulu Mountain National Nature Reserve

Overview

Located at the junction of Puxian and Xixian counties in Shanxi province, the Wulu Mountain National Nature Reserve is situated at the southern end of the Lyuliang Mountain Range, with geographical coordinates of 36°23′45″N to 36°38′20″N and 111°2′E to 111°18′E. This nature reserve is classified as a forest ecosystem type, covering a total area of 20,617.3 hectares, with a forest coverage rate of 68%. The reserve was established in 1993. Its main conservation targets are the globally endangered brown-eared pheasant and the Chinese endemic species, the white pine.

Wulu Temple

The Wulu Temple, built in honor of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) Jin state official, Hu Tu, is located within the reserve. The temple's stone tablets carry a deep historical significance. To the north of the temple is the Wulong Cave, a courtyard-style building with over 40 rooms, covering an area of 2,976 square meters. It is a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) structure, with a depth of over 20 meters and a height of more than 3 meters. The cave houses five statues of the Wulong Holy Mother, and there is a mysterious cave on the western side that is said to lead to Shaanxi. The cave is moist and slippery, with water droplets falling from stalactites, which locals believe can predict the weather.

Wulong Holy Mother Shrine

The Wulong Holy Mother Shrine is located in the reserve, with a major annual ceremony held on the 18th day of the fifth lunar month. During this time, performances are staged at the temple, and pilgrims from surrounding areas come to pay homage. The "Dragon Mother Spirit Cliff" is one of the ancient eight scenic spots of Puxian county.
